Since our beginnings in 1999, we've been managed by a group of dedicated volunteer community leaders engaging with individual citizens to improve Norfolk's environment.

Our Mission

The mission of the Friends of Norfolk’s Environment is to inspire a spirit of environmental stewardship among all citizens of the city.

We believe that citizen-based initiatives can build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods. We believe that partnerships among government, businesses, non-profits, and citizens afford the best opportunity for success.

The Friends is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2019.  Its all-volunteer membership is committed to the greening of Norfolk through the expansion of its tree canopy.  It emphasizes education and restoration activities, sponsors Jamm’n Jamz, an annual invitation to learn about, celebrate, and plant trees, and seeks collaborators who want to convert vacant lots, unplanted riparian buffers, medians, etc. into attractive urban spaces.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
